Medicare recipients who are high risk for heart disease or stroke may be surprised to learn that the Wegovy, the popular yet expensive weight loss drug, is now covered.

After Wegovy received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for weight loss, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reconsidered coverage because reducing heart disease risk is a medically accepted use under federal law, the spokesperson said.
Medicare will still not cover Wegovy if it is only being used for weight management, the spokesperson said.
